Lagna-Introduction-2
Continued from  Lagna - Introduction-1

(9) Chandra Lagna
[BPHS, Ch. 9]

28. Should a malefic be in the 4th, identical with an inimical Raashi, counted from Chandra, while there is no benefic in a Kendra, the child will lose its mother in a premature manner.

[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 16]
35. The success of the house under examination may be declared when the lord of the Lagna gets into conjunction with the lord of that house in course of their transits provided that the lord of the house concerned is strong, otherwise the result will be different. Similar assessment should be made with reference to the sign in which the Moon is posited (Chandra Lagna).

[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 26]
1. Among all the Lagnas, the Moon's Lagna (Chandra Lagna or the sign in which the Moon is posited), is most important for assessing the effects of transits (Gochar Phalam). It is, therefore, imperative to make predictions about effects of the transits of planets through various signs from the sign occupied by the Moon.

(10) Soorya Lagna
[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 15]

24 From the sign occupied by the Sun one ought to determine the appearance of the father of the native. The father's financial position and renown should be ascertained from the 2nd house from the sign occupied by the Sun. His character, brothers etc., should be examined from the 3rd house from that occupied by the Sun. The 4th house reckoned from the Sun will give information about father's happiness and his mother. The intelligence and tranquility of the father has to be determined from the 5th house, his differences, enemies and disease from the 6th House, his love and passion from the 7th house, his longevity and death from the 8th house, his virtues, wealth, father's father from the 9th house, his professional pursuits from the 10th house, his financial gains from the 11th house and his losses and expenditure from the 12th house from the sign occupied by the Sun.

(11) Kaarak Lagna
[BPHS, Ch. 18]

26. The native will marry at 12, or l9, if Shukra is in an angle from the Lagna, while Shani is in Yuvatee counted from Shukra.

[BPHS, Ch. 31]
8. Argalaa should be counted from a Raashi, or a Graha, as the case may be.

[BPHS, Ch. 32]
18-21. Constant Kaarakatwa - I narrate below the constant Kaarakatwa, as related to the Graha.
The stronger among Soorya and Shukra indicates the father, while
the stronger among Chandra and Mangal indicates the mother.
Mangal denotes sister, brother-in-law, younger brother and mother.
Budh rules maternal relative, while
Guru indicates paternal grand father.
Shukra and Shani denote husband and sons respectively.
Ketu denote wife, father, mother, parents-in law and maternal grand father.
These are constant Kaarakatwa.

22-24. Bhaav Related - These constant significances are derivable from the Bhaav, counted from the said constant Kaarakatwa.
The 9th from Soorya denotes father,
the 4th from Chandra mother,
the 3rd from Mangal brothers,
the 6th from Budh maternal uncle,
the 5th from Guru sons,
the 7th from Shukra wife and
the 8th from Shani death.
The learned should consider all these and declare related effects accordingly.

[Horasara of Phrituyasas, Ch. 8]
Soorya gives vitality to the Dashaa effects, while Chandra regains the same. All other Graha are known, as starry Graha and remain under the influence of Soorya and Chandra.

(12) Nakshatra Lagna
[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 26]

35. The following table shows the distribution of the 27 Nakshatras reckoned from the Janma Nakshatra and the relative effects in the course of the transit of the Sun: ...

26. If the star occupied by the Sun at the time happens to be the Vedha star to the natal (Janma) star, there will be apprehension of danger to life; if the Adhana Nakshatra (19th from the Janma Nakshatra), there will be fear and anxiety; if to the Kharmaksha (10th from the Janma Nakshatra) loss of wealth will take place, should, however, the Sun in the above position be also associated with a malefic, death alone has to be expected.

42.44. In finding out the transit effects at any particular time
(a) The 12th Nakshatra from the Nakshatra occupied by the Sun,
(b) the 3rd Nakshatra from the Nakshatra occupied by Mars,
(c) the 6th Nakshatra from the Nakshatra occupied by Jupiter, and
(d) the 8th Nakshatra from that occupied by Saturn, are called Latta.

(a) the 5th Nakshatra from the Nakshatra occupied by Venus,
(b) the 7th from the Nakshatra occupied by Mercury,
(c) the 8th from the Nakshatra occupied by Rahu, and
(d) the 22nd from the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon,
are called Prishtha Latta or rear Latta.

Natural Kaarak
[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 15]

15. Ascertainment about his own self, father, influence, health, vitality and fortune be made from the Sun. The Moon signifies the native's character of heart, understanding, royal favor, mother and prosperity. From Mars one should ascertain his own courage, disease, characteristic, qualities, younger brothers, lands, enemies and paternal blood relations. Mercury is concerned with learning, relatives in general, discrimination, maternal uncle, friends, and speech.

16. The native should ascertain about his genius, wealth, physical development, sons and knowledge through Jupiter. One should seek the jurisdiction of Venus to know about his wife, vehicles, ornaments, love affairs and pleasures from spouse. Saturn will furnish information about native's span of life, livelihood, the cause of death, his adversity and his servants. Raahu signifies paternal grandfather and Ketu maternal grandfather.

Bhaav Kaarak

17. The signification of the Kaarak of the houses commencing from the Lagna are
(1) the Sun, (2) Jupiter, (3) Mars, (4) the Moon and Mercury, (5) Jupiter, (6) Venus, (7) Saturn, (8) the Sun and Jupiter, (9) Jupiter, the Sun, Mercury and Saturn, (10) Jupiter and (11) Saturn.

21. In the same manner should the effects of the father, the mother, the brother, the maternal uncle, the son, the husband and the servant be determined by treating the signs occupied by their respective Kaarak. The meaning of this is that if the effects of the father are to be determined, the sign occupied by the Sun should be treated as the Lagna and the second from that sign all information of the father's brother and the 3rd about mother's brother and so on. For effects of the mother the sign occupied by the Moon, for the effects of the brother the sign occupied by Mercury, for the effects of the son, the sign occupied by Jupiter, for the effects of wife the sign occupied by Venus, for the effects of servant the sign occupied by Saturn, have to be treated as the Lagna.

25. Thus all details about the father, mother, brother, son etc, of a house should be determined by a reference to the Bhaav concerned, its lord and its Kaarak. When any house, its lord and its Kaarak are all strong, the prosperity of that house is definite.

Functional Kaarak
[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 2]

If a house stands for a certain subject matter, the Lord of that house will also be considered to be concerned with it. For example, the 6th house deals with enemies. Naturally the same subject will have to be examined from the Lord of the 6th house. This is so because of his lordship of the 6th house. Here we have to consider also the natural or inherent characteristics and functions of that planet. Let us suppose that in 10 birth charts, the Sun is the Lord of the ten different houses. There is doubt that as Lord of the Ascendant, Sun will function in that capacity and as the Lord of the 2nd. He will be concerned with wealth; but he will also, in course of its effects, will produce results of his inherent qualities and characteristics.

[Note from Revati: Other functional Kaarak of a planet is his role as a Char Kaarak.]

Varnada Lagna
[BPHS, Ch. 5]

10-13½. If the natal Lagna is an odd Raashi, count directly from Mesh to natal Lagna. If the natal Lagna is an even Raashi, count from Meen to the natal Lagna in the reverse order. Similarly, if the Horaa Lagna is an odd one, count from Mesh to Horaa Lagna in direct order. If the Horaa Lagna is an even one, count from Meen to Horaa Lagna in the reverse order.

If both the products are odd Raashi, or even Raashis, then add both the figures. If one is odd and the other is even, then know the difference between the two products. If the latest product in this process is an odd one, count so many Raashi from Mesha in a direct manner; if an even one, count so many Raashi from Meen in reverse order. The Raashi so known will be the Varnada for Lagna.

14-15. Effects of Varnada - Now listen to the use of the above. Out of the two, viz. natal Lagna and Hora Lagna, whichever is stronger, from there Varnada starts. If the natal Lagna is an odd Raashi, the counting of Dashaa is clockwise, otherwise anticlockwise. Lagna Dashaa years will equal the number of Raashi, intervening between the natal Lagna and Varnada. Similarly for other Bhaav.

16-20. Effects of Varnada (cont). Should a Kon from Lagna's Varnada be occupied, or aspected by a Malefic, the native will live only up to the Dashaa of the said Raashi. Just, as the Rudra Graha in Shool Dashaa is capable of causing evils, the above-mentioned Graha related to Varnada's Kon be treated.

The Varnada Lagna be considered, as natal Lagna, while the 7th from Varnada (Lagna) will denote the longevity of the spouse, the 11th (from Varnada Lagna) longevity of elder brothers and sisters, the 3rd (from Varnada Lagna) longevity of younger brothers and sisters, the 5th [from Varnada Lagna] the longevity of sons, the 4th (from Varnada Lagna) longevity of mother and the 9th [from Varnada Lagna] longevity of father. The Dashaa of the Shool Raashi will inflict greater evils.

21-24. Effects of Varnada (cont.). Similar assessments be made with reference to the Varnada of each Bhaav, commencing the first, and the evils and goods due to a nativity be known. These Varnada Dashas are only for Bhaav (Raashi) and not their occupants. The sub period of each Dashaa will be one twelfth of the Dashaa and the order will also be clockwise, or anti-clockwise, as explained earlier. The natal Lagna is to be calculated according to birth place, while Bhaav Lagna, Horaa Lagna etc are common to all places.

[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaya 1, Pada 1]
SU. 32. All Raashi and Bhaav are studied by Varnada Lagna. Hence it will be explained in this aphorism.
Notes from Translator: [These extensive notes are given in the appendix at the end of this article.]

SU. 33. Varnada is not to be applied for the planets, but only for Raashi. In all the Sootra of Jaimini, the Ka, Ta, Pa, Yadi Sootra of interpreting the language should not be applied to the planets. The author means that the Graha or the planets are designated by their various names and never by the letter system.

Arudhaa Lagna
[BPHS, Ch. 29, Sl. 1-7]
See also   Arudhaa Lagna

1-3. Method of Bhaav Calculation - O Braahman, I shall now tell you about the Padas (Arudhaa) for Bhaav and Graha as well, as laid down by the earlier Maharshi. The Pad of Lagna will correspond to the Raashi, arrived at by counting so many Raashi from Lagna's Lord, as he is away from Tanu Bhaav. Similarly Pad for other Bhaav be known through their Lords. The word 'Pad' exclusively denotes the Pad for Lagna.

Names of the 12 Arudhaa are Lagna Pad - Arudhaa of Tanu Bhaav, Dhanu of Dhanu Bhaav, Vikram (Bhraatra) of Sahaj Bhaav, Maatra (Sukh) of Bandhu Bhaav, Mantra (Putra) of Putra Bhaav, Rog (Shatru) of Ari Bhaav, Dar (Kalatra) of Yuvatee Bhaav, Maran of Randhra Bhaav, Pitru of Dharm Bhaav, Karm of Karm Bhaav, Laabh of Laabh Bhaav, and Vyaya of Vyaya Bhaav.

4-5. Special Exceptions. The same Bhaav, or the 7th from it does not become its Pad. When the Pad falls in the same Bhaav, the 10th therefrom be treated, as its Pad. Similarly, when the 7th becomes the Pad of a Bhaav, the 4th from the original Bhaav in question be treated, as its Pad. If the ruler of a Bhaav be in the 4th from the Bhaav, then the very Bhaav occupied be noted, as the Pad.

6-7. Padas for Grahas. Note the position of a Graha and see how many Raashis away is its own Raashi with reference to its position. Count so many Raashi from the said own Raashi and the resultant Raashi will become the Arudhaa of the Graha. If a Graha owns two Raashi, or, if a Raashi is owned by two Graha; consider the stronger and declare effects accordingly.
[Note from Revati: rest of chapter 29 explains effects of Arudhaa/Pad]

[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaya 1, Pada 1]
SU. 29. Arudha Lagna is the point obtained by counting as many signs from the place of lord of Lagna as the lord of Lagna is removed from Lagna.

Aatm Kaarak / Chara Kaarak Lagna
[BPHS, Ch. 32, Sl. 17]

1-2. I now detail below Aatm Kaarak etc, obtainable from among the 7 Graha, viz Soorya to Shani. Some say, that Raahu will become a [Chara] Kaarak, when there is a state of similarity in terms of longitude between (two) Graha. Yet some say, that the 8 Graha, including Raahu, will have to be considered irrespective of such a state.

3-8. Aatm Kaarak Defined. Among the Grahas from Soorya etc whichever has traversed maximum number of degrees in a particular Raashi is called Aatm Kaarak. If the degrees are identical, then the one with more minutes of arc and, if the minutes are also identical, then the one with higher seconds of arc, have to be considered. In that case these three are called Antya Kaarak, Madhya Kaarak and Upakhet. In the case of Raahu deduct his longitude in that particular Raashi from 30. The Kaarak will have to be decided, as above and, as per further rules given below. Out of these Kaarak, Aatm Kaarak is the most important and has a prime say on the native, just as the king is the most famous among the men of his country and is the head of all affairs and is entitled to arrest and release men.

9-12. Importance of Aatm Kaarak. O Brahmin, as the minister cannot go against the king, the other Kaarakas, viz Putra Kaarak, Amatya Kaarak etc. cannot predominate over Aatm Kaarak in the affairs of the native. If the Aatm Kaaraka is adverse, other Kaarakas cannot give their benefic effects. Similarly, if Aatm Kaarak is favourable, other Kaarakas cannot predominate with their malefic influences.

13-17. Other Kaarak. The Graha next to Aatm Kaarak in terms of longitude is called Amatya Kaarak. Similarly following one another in terms of longitude are Bhraatra Kaarak, Maatra Kaaraka, Pitra Kaarak, Putra Kaarak, Gnati Kaaraka and Stree Kaarak [Daaraa Kaarak]. These are Char Kaarak, or inconstant significators. Some consider Maatra Kaarak and Putra Kaarak, as identical. If two Graha have the same longitude, both become the same Kaarak, in which case there will be a deficit of one Kaarak. In that circumstance consider constant significator in the context of benefic/malefic influence for the concerned relative.

Kaarakaansh Lagna
[BPHS, Ch. 33, Sl. 1]

1. O Brahmin, as laid down by Lord Brahma, I now tell you about the effects of Kaarakaamsh identical with Mesh etc. (Kaarakaansh is the Navaansh, occupied by the Aatm Kaarak Graha).
[Note by Revati: whole chapter 33 in BPHS explains placements of Grahas in Kaarakaamsh.]

Lagnaansh, Varg Lagna
[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaya 1, Pada 3]

SU 27. If all the 6 Lagnas - the Navaamsha, Horaa and Ghatikaa Lagnas or Drekkana, Horaa and Ghatikaa Lagnas are aspected by one planet, there will be Raaj Yog.

Lagna of Lord of the Year, Month, Week, Horaa
[BPHS, Ch. 3]

38. The Lords of the year, month, day and Horaa (hour of Graha) are stronger than the other in ascending order.

[Brihat Jataka, Ch. 2]
St 21: The night gives Moon, Mars and Saturn Kaal Bal. Mercury has it always. The rest are powerful during the day. Benefics have Kaal Bal during the bright half of the lunar month, while Malefics get it during the dark half. The lord of the year, of the day, of the Horaa, of the Maas also gets Kaal Bal. Sa, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Raahu, are respectively stronger than each other.

[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 4]
42. Effects of Lord of Year etc. The Lords of the year, month, week and Horaa improve two-fold in their Dashaa happiness, wealth and fame. That is the Lord of the month gives two-fold results, as against year Lord, the week Lord two-fold of month Lord and the Horaa Lord two-fold of week Lord.

[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 7]
1. Lord of Week-Day etc. The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn rule the week-days etc. Whichever planet becomes the Lord of the first week-day in the month of Aashwin in the year of Aashwin, will become the Lord of month and year.

2-3. The fourth planet counted from the Lord of the first year rules the second year. Similar counting of fourth Lords for the subsequent years should be made to know the Lords thereof. There are 24 Horas (planetary hours) in each day (from one Sun-rise to the next). The first Horaa is ruled by the Lord of the week day, while the subsequent ones are ruled by the Lords of the sixth week-days thereof. Thirty (Savana) days make one (Savana) month. To know the Lord of the week-day in particular month, the months past should be multiplied by 30, increased by one and divided by 7. The remainder represents the Lord of the week-day counted from the earlier week-day Lord.

4. A Saavan month has 30 days and each month, viz Chaitra, Vishaakhaa etc, commences with the first day of bright half and ends with the 30th Tithi (Amaavasyaa).

5-6. Bhaav Effects. The good effects relating to a Bhaav can be better reaped, if an enterprise relating to that Bhaav is started in an Ascendant ruled by the Lord of that Bhaav, or, when the Lord thereof is in an Upachaya House, or on the week-day, Horaa, year, or month ruled by that Bhaav Lord. The good effects will be 25% by year Lord, 50% by month Lord, 75% by Lord of week and 100% by Horaa Lord.

Lagna (Ascendant) and Special Lagna (Part 2)
(c) 2008 by Revati

Contents : (1) Chandra Lagna, (2) Soorya Lagna, (3) Kaarak and Paak Lagna, (4) Nakshatra Lagna (Janma Nakshatra Lagna), (5) Aatma Kaarak Lagna and Char Kaarak Lagnas, (6) Kaarakamsa Lagna, (7) Lagna of Hour Lord, Day Lord, Month Lord, Year Lord,  (8) Lagnaansh, Varg Lagna, (9) Varnada Lagna, (10) Arudhaa and Upapad Lagna

Chandra Lagna
Moon (Chandra) is the mind (consciousness), Lagna is the body and the self, The Sun (Surya) is the soul of all.

Soorya gives vitality to the Dashaa effects, while Chandra regains the same. All other Graha are known, as starry Graha and remain under the influence of Soorya and Chandra. (Horasara of Phrituyasas, Ch. 8)

Counting from Moon:
Most people forget to count houses from Moon as well as from Lagna, particularly transit positions of planets, but planetary periods as well.

Vinshottaree and Kaal Chakra Dashaa are based on Moon's position in horoscope (Vinshottaree on Moon's Nakshatra, Kaal Chakra on Moon's Navaansh). This underlines the fundamental importance of The Moon.

'Moon is the mind.' It is our mind, state and direction of our mind, our consciousness, our way of thinking, our mentality; remember that our individual mind is creating and manifesting our subjective world and surroundings. Starting Dashaa from Moon shows the current state of mind and its current direction, consciously and unconsciously (from psychology we know that more than 80% in our mind is running unconsciously).

For example, if a man may have the idea "all foreigners are dirty" in his mind, he will - due to his mind - treat foreigners in a very different way than a man having the idea "all foreigners are interesting people" in his mind. So, his mind, his conception of the world *of his subjective* world, is *creating* its own reality, *his* reality (which he believes to be the 'objective' world)!

Therefore counting from Moon is that important: The mind and mentality is creating our world, therefore two of the most important Dashaa are starting with Moon's position. Not Lagna placement in Nakshatra is most important: Moon placement in Nakshatra is forming our birth star!!!

2nd from Moon shows our mind, our attitude towards wealth etc,
4th from Moon shows our mind, our attitude towards family affairs, our mother etc,
7th from Moon shows our mind, our attitude towards relationships, sexuality etc. (just to mention a few)

Moon
- mind, mentality, consciousness, attitude
- manifestations (of our mind and Soul)
- feelings, emotions, inner peace, dependent on changing moods
- powerful inner world, strong imaginations, intuitive
- appreciation of contacts and relationships, social nature, service oriented
- receptive, passive
- material wealth (Taurus is Moolatrikona)
- home, own country, nearest surroundings
- beauty, popularity, masses
- mother, caring, nurturing, devoted
- Moolatrikona Taurus, own Raashi Cancer, Nakshatras: Rohinee, Hast, Shravan

Soorya Lagna
Moon (Chandra) is the mind (consciousness), Lagna is the body and the self, The Sun (Surya) is the soul of all. Soorya gives vitality to the Dasha effects, while Chandra regains the same. All other Grahas are known, as starry Graha and remain under the influence of Soorya and Chandra.
(Horasara of Phrituyasas, Ch. 8)

Counting from the Sun:
'Sun is the soul.' It is the self, showing our personality, how it is acting in world, our very peculiar individuality. Moreover, it energizes the wish of our eternal soul to be realized in this incarnation (most Upagrahas are counted from Sun's position - Upagrahas explain in more detail the desire of eternal soul to be fulfilled).

Vinshottaree Dashaa can also be reckoned from The Sun. Important Sudarshana Chakra Dasa (a conditional Dashaa) for yearly predictions takes Lagna, Moon and The Sun as reference for predictions! Mool Dashaa takes the stronger of Lagna, Moon, Sun as basis for first Maha Dashaa.

The Sun represents our eternal Soul, our conditioning from former incarnations and desires, our vitality, inner force, aims guiding us and our activities and our individuality. Our Soul is giving her light to the Moon, which represents our mind. Moon manifests the goals and desires of the Sun (our eternal Soul, our Higher Self). The Sun is the natural significator of all 10th Bhaav matters (10th Bhaav is 'Karm Bhaav').

2nd from Sun shows our activities (conscious or unconscious) related to the fulfillment of our eternal Soul's desire with regard to wealth and all other 2nd Bhaav matters.

Conclusion: Counting bhavas/planets from Moon/The Sun is as important as from Lagna, counting current transits from them as well (but Moon - Chandra Lagna - remains to be the prime reference).

Sun
- the central (all other planets/topics evolving around it), strong sense of own individuality
- the eternal Soul (on a higher level), the ego (on a lower level)
- leadership, dominance, power, authority
- aristocratic, proud, vain, pride, demand respect, egocentrism and egoism, high standards
- active/activities, energetic, working (but prefers to let others work for himself)
- father
- Mool-trikon and own Raashi Leo, Nakshatra: Krittikaa, U-Phaalgunee, U-Aashaadhaa

Kaarak and Paak Lagna
Kaarak Lagna means nothing but taking a planet as natural and functional significator ('Kaaraka') as Lagna.

For example, if 2nd Bhaav from Lagna is Sagittarius Raashi, Jupiter may be the Lord of Sagittarius, you may count houses from Jupiter as well, which is Kaarak Lagna in this case for all 2nd Bhaav matters. All the natural significations of Jupiter and their manifestation are be be included in this interpretation as well.

Kaarak Lagna shows activities of a native related to the themes a particular Bhaav is connected with.

Paak Lagna is the Raashi containing the Lagna Lord. Counting from Paak Lagna is very important and shows the main activities of an individual.

Note: Counting from Madhya Lagna (containing the Medium Coeli - MC, the highest degree of the Sun during his daily sojourn) and from Madhya Lagna Lord is important as well.

Nakshatra Lagna
Planets can be counted from Janma Nakshatra (natal Nakshatra of Moon) or other Nakshatras as well, this may be called Nakshatra Lagna.

Note: This method is described in Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 26.

Aatma Kaarak Lagna, Char Kaarak Lagna
Aatma Kaaraka is the planet with the highest degree in a Raashi; he can be taken as Lagna (starting point for counting houses) as well. The other 6 (or 7) Char Kaarak are defined in the same way: The planet with the 2nd highest number is called Amatya Kaarak, the planet with the lowest longitude Daaraa Kaarak.

Note: This method is described in BPHS, Ch. 32.

Kaarakaansh Lagna
Kaarakaansh Lagna is the Navaansh (D-9 Varg) in which the Aatm Kaarak is posited in.

Note: This method is described in BPHS, Ch 33 and Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaya 1, Pada 2.

Lagna of Hour Lord, Day Lord, Month Lord, Year Lord

Each hour, day, month and year has its own planetary lord, it may be interesting to take these lords (of a natal chart) as Lagna as well and count houses there from.

Lagnaansh, Varg Lagna

Calculation of Varg Lagnas:
Each Raashi is subdivided into several parts, 'Ansh'. A Varg (sub-divisional chart) shows all Graha in Ansh of Raashi. Each Graha is posited in these particular Ansh (various Ansh for various purposes) and Lagna, too. The placement of Lagna in an Ansh Raashi may be called 'Varga Lagna', the traditional naming is Lagnaansh (the Ansh of Lagna). Most important Lagnaansh are those of Horaa, Drekkaan and Navaansh Varg.

Lagna in Horaa Ansh is called 'Horaa Lagna', in Drekkaan Ansh 'Drekkaan Lagna', in Navaansh 'Navaansh Lagna' and so on (for all Varg charts). Placement of Lagna Lord in his Ansh is significant as well, Yuti and Drishti too.

Use of Varg Lagna:
According to the signification of the particular Varg Lagna is regarded from various perspectives, e.g. from the perspective of wealth and prosperity (Horaa), of ambitions and desires (Drekkaan), of Dharm and fortunes (Navaansh), and so on.

Varnada Lagna (VL)

Calculation of Varnada Lagna - Varnada Lagna is *calculated on the basis of natal Lagna and natal Horaa Lagna (!)* - the stronger of both is decisive for final calculation of Varnada Lagna and Varnas of Bhaav. The calculation is described as follows (taken directly from BPHS, Ch. 5):---
1. If the natal Lagna is an odd Raashi, count directly from Mesh to natal Lagna. If the natal Lagna is an even Raashi, count from Meen to the natal Lagna in the reverse order.
2. Similarly, if the Horaa Lagna is an odd one, count from Mesh to Horaa Lagna in direct order. If the Horaa Lagna is an even one, count from Meen to Horaa Lagna in the reverse order.
3a. If both the products are odd Raashi, or even Raashi, then add both the figures.
3b. If one is odd and the other is even, then know the difference between the two products.
4. If the latest product in this process is an odd one, count so many Raashi from Mesh in a direct manner; if an even one, count so many Raashi from Meen in reverse order.
5. The Raashi so known will be the Varnada for Lagna.

Varnada Lagna is very early introduced in BPHS (in Ch. 5), the very first Dashaa explained there is - Varnada Dashaa. Jaimini Sutra emphasize Varnada Lagna as well.

V1 (Varnada of 1st Bhaav, Varnada Lagna) and V7 always have the same degrees and are conjoined in a Raashi/Bhaav. Same for V2/V8, V3/V9, V4/V10 and V5/V11.

Use of Varnada Lagna:
Varnada Lagna is related to the following themes:
1. Longevity, parents and relatives
2. all 'evils and goods'
3. 'caste', social status, profession (of native and his relatives, too)

Varnada Lagna (V1 or VL) in Raashi/Bhaav describes the longevity and 'good and evils' of the native, V7 (Varnada of 7th Bhaav) of his spouse, V3 of his older brothers and sisters, V4 of his mother, V5 of his progeny (especially first child), V9 of his father.

Arudhaa and Upapad Lagna
See also   Arudhaa Lagna

Calculation of Arudhaa Lagna:  Arudhaa are based on the distance of a Bhaav Lord to his own Raashi/Bhaav - this distance mirrored to a particular Bhaav we arrive at the Arudha of a Bhaav. If a Bhaav Lord is placed in 1st Bhaav, the 10th Bhaav from it becomes his Arudha, if posited in 7th Bhaav, the 4th from 7th becomes his Arudhaa, if posited in 4th Bhaav, 4th Bhaav itself becomes Arudhaa Bhaav. Reversely, Arudhaa of Graha are based on the distance of a Raashi to his own Lord.

AL is the Arudhaa of Lagna (1st Bhaav), A2 is the Arudhaa of 2nd Bhaav, and so on.
Upapada (UL) is the Arudhaa of the 12th Bhaav.

Use of Arudhaa Lagna:
An Arudhaa of a Bhaav shows perception of other people, illusions but also the final results and manifestation of matters related to its Bhaav. This may apply to Graha Arudhaa as well, in concordance with their natural and functional significations.

Arudhaa Lagna refers to the perception of other people with regard to the native's persons (and: perception and true self is generally not the same), counting from Arudhaa Lagna shows various manifestations of themes, related to the Bhaav (2nd from AL manifestation of 2nd Bhaav matters, and so on).

Upapad Lagna

is related to marriage and spouse, but to 12th Bhaav matters as well.

Per Guru Sanja Ji Don't worship the God which is 7th from your Upapad Lagnam .

APPENDIX: NOTES FROM THE TRANSLATOR OF JAIMINI SUTRAS

[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaya 1, Pada 1]
SU. 32. All Raashis and Bhaavas are studied by Varnada Lagna. Hence it will be explained in this aphorism.

NOTES FROM TRANSLATOR. Raghavabhatita, Pantha, Nilakanta and other older commentators have given the fullest notes and details on this Sootra and I have to take the readers along those intricate paths. They have introduced Varnada Lagna, Ghatikaa Lagna, Horaa Lagna and other details. The following is the full exposition for all these. Readers are advised to have a large fund of patience and devote some time to master these details. In all the following Sootra of Jaimini, Varn or Katapayadi letters are used to indicate Bhaav and Raashi. But for planets their various names are used and they should not be interpreted with the help of such letters. For those who are born in odd signs count from Mesh in the regular order, for those who are born in even signs count from Meen Raashi backwards till we get to Bhaav Lagna and keep these figures on one side.

Again count for those who are born in odd signs from Mesh to Horaa Lagna in the regular order and for those born in even signs count from Meen to Janm Lagna in the reverse order, and deduct the smaller figures from the larger and counting again from Mesh Raashi forwards to the number of remainder and fix that Raashi as the Varnada Raashi for odd signs and for person born in even signs counting back from Meen to the number of Raashi given by the figure, take that Lagna as the *Varnada Lagna*. This will certainly be not intelligible, unless a few examples are given here to illustrate the principles involved.
Varieties of Lagna will be explained here. Bhaav Lagna - used in Jaimini, means the ordinary Lagna as is mentioned in the ordinary books on Astrology. The sign that rises at birth on any particular day.

Chandra Lagna - or the Janma Raashi

Chandra Lagna is that sign in which Chandra is situated at the. time of birth. This is determined by constellation ruling on that day. "Pad Lagna" - means that sign in number again from the position of the Lord of Lagna which he occupies from Lagna. "Horaa Lagna" - Take the time of birth from the sunrise and fix it in Ghatees. Then divide this number by 2.5 which is called a Horaa and the number thus obtained represents the Horaa Lagna. Take an example. A man was born on the 3rd of the solar month Kumbh at 14.5 Ghatee after sunrise. Now 14.5 Ghatee divided by 2.5 will give us 5 and 2 Ghatee as a remainder. Therefore the Horaa Lagna falls in the 6th from Kumbh-Kanyaa.

Take a person born on the 2nd of the solar month. Vrishchik at about 29 Ghatee after sunrise. Dividing this by 2.5 Ghatees we get 11 and a remainder 1.5 Ghatee. That is the Horaa Lagna will be the 12th from the sign occupied by the Sun, viz, Vrishchik or it falls in Tulaa the 12th from it. If suppose the man is born on that day at 48 Ghatee after the sunrise then divide this by 2.5 Ghatee. We get 19 and a remainder of 5 Ghatee. Therefore the Horaa Lagna falls in the 20th. As there are only 12 signs, deduct this figure from 20 and we get 8. Therefore the 8th from Vrishchik will be the Horaa Lagna and it falls in Mithun. Here also the order already named for odd and even signs should be observed.

Ghatikaa Lagna

From the sunrise to the time of birth find out how many Ghatikaas have passed and find out the Raasai which falls at the time and this will be easy to understand. Say a man is born at 25 Ghatee after sunrise on the 2nd of Vrishabh Maas. Then take 25 Ghatees and count from Vrishabh; whenever, the figure of Ghatee is more than 12 deduct or divide the number of Ghatee and find out the remainder. 25 divided by 12 will give us a balance of 1 after going twice. Thus in this case the Ghatikaa Lagna falls in one and therefore in Vrishabh itself.

Varnada Lagna

We have already explained this and we will give clearer explanations later on.

As Jaimini insists on Savya-right and Apsasavya-left for odd and even signs our readers must understand this point clearly and keep before their vision in all counting for the various Lagna.

An Indian Ghatee means 24 minutes of English time. An hour means 2.5 Ghatee. A minute means 2.5 Vighatee. The minuteness of the divisions of time, reached by the Indian astronomers, is simply astounding. The Europeans have no idea of them. I shall give them here for ready reference. The European conception of the minute divisions of time is as follows. A day is divided into 24 hours. An hour is divided into 60 minutes. A minute is divided into 60 seconds. Here ends their conception of time. 24 x 60 x 60 or one day contains 86,400 seconds. This is the highest idea of the European conception of the divisions of time for a day. Take the conception of the division of Time by the Indian Astronomers.

In the Uttar Go-Grahan or the release of the cattle, Arjun went to effect their release and Duryodhan takes objection to the appearance of Arjun before the stipulated time for their Agyaat-vaas or incognito existence for 12 years. Bheeshm, the greatest warrior, saint and philosopher in the whole of Mahaabhaarat, explains the astronomical details and calculations of time and convinces Duryodhan, that the time of 12 years imposed on the Paandav had passed away the previous day and Arjun was justified in his appearance for the release of the cattle.

According to Aaryan Astronomers a day is divided into 60 Ghatee.
Each Ghatee is divided into 60 Vighatee.
Each Vighatee is divided into 60 Liptas.
Each Lipta is divided into 60 Viliptas.
Each Vilipta is divided into 60 Paras and
Each Para is divided into 60 Tatpar.
The figures when multiplied stand thus :
one day 60 Gh x 60 VG x 60 L x 60 VL x 60 P x 60 TP or 60 x 60 x 60 x 60 x 60 x 60.
My good readers, this humble figure when multiplied will give you 46,656,000,000.

Imagine here the conception of the minuteness of time by the Maharshi and their intellect. A day in the calculation of Hindu astronomers contains the above number of Tatpar. This can possibly be conceived by the highest human intellect under the highest Yogik and experienced Divya Drishti or Divine vision and can never be the work of ordinary mortals however high their genius may be. I leave my readers to judge of these facts with their own intelligence and not be guided by the stupid theory of Hindus borrowing their Astrology from the barbarous Greeks and Chaldean. Has any man in the world conceived divisions of time more minutely? If so, who is he and where can we find him?
