Durgaa Devee

The Great Goddess Durgaa is exquisitely beautiful. Her form is blindingly bright, with three lotus-like eyes, 10 powerful hands, lush hair with beautiful curls, a red-golden glow from her skin and a quarter Moon (2nd Phase) on her forehead. She wears a shiny oceanic blue attire emitting fierce rays. Her ornaments are carved beautifully of gold, with ocean pearls and precious stones embedded in it. Each god gave her his own most powerful weapons - a few of them are :
(1) Rudra's Trishool (trident)
(2) Vishnu's discus (Sudarshan Chakra)
(3) Indra's Vajra (thunderbolt)
(4) Brahmaa's Kamandal,
(5) Kuber's Gadaa (Mace)
(6) Himaalaya gifted her a fierce whitish golden lion to ride

Durgaa is the higher, more refined and benign symbol of the unconscious (than Kaalee). She has 8 hands representing the eightfold elements of man. She wears a Maalaa of human heads to symbolize her wisdom and power. These heads are generally 52 in number, representing the 52 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, which are the outer manifestations of Shabd Brahm or Brahmaa in the form of sound. Durgaa is the remover of all evil consequences of life and the giver of power and peace that is released from Moolaadhaar Chakra.

At the end of the 8th and beginning of the 9th day of waxing Moon, Chand and Mund Raakshas came to fight the goddess. She turned blue with anger and goddess Chaamundaa leaped out of her third eye. Her form was the most powerful one with 3 red eyes, blood-filled tongue and dark skin; who finally killed the twin demons with her sword. This form of the Divine goddess is worshipped during the Sandhi Kshan (joint time of the 8th and the 9th day) of Durgaa Poojaa festival, as Chandee Poojaa. Finally on the tenth day of waxing Moon, goddess Durgaa killed Mahishaasur with her trident. That is why she is called Mahishaasur Mardinee also.

According to the narrative from the Devee Mahaatmya of the Maarkandeya Puraan, the form of Durgaa was created as a warrior goddess to fight a demon. The demon's father Rambh, king of the demons, once fell in love with a water buffalo, and Mahish Asur (the demon Mahish) was born out of this union. He is therefore able to change between human and buffalo form at will (Mahish means "buffalo"). Through intense prayers to Brahmaa, Mahishaasur had the boon that he could not be defeated by any man or god. He unleashed a reign of terror on earth, Heaven and the nether worlds. That is why the woman was created to kill him.

Eventually, since only a woman could kill him, the Holy Male Trinity (Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh) went down to the Gangaa River and prayed the Mantra, "Om Namo Devaaya", imploring of the great goddess Devee to save their realm from ruin. They were blessed with her compassion when the goddess Durgaa was born out of the river.

From Durgaa Sapt Shatee, Chap 2
Devee was formed out of the brilliance emanated from Vishnu (Chakrapaani) and the brilliance from Shiv and Brahmaa also joined together. It was also joined by the brilliance from other Devtaa. The brilliance thus formed spread in all the direction and rose like a huge mountain and could not be compared with anything else. The brilliance thus formed took the form a beautiful lady.

Lord Shiv gave her a face.
Lord Yam gave her long hair.
Lord Vishnu gave her shoulders from His rays
Moon gave her two breasts and
Indra gave the middle portion of the body.
Lord Varun gave her thighs and buttock.
Prithvi gave her hips.
The rays from Brahmaa provided her with legs.
Sun's rays gave her fingers of the feet.
Vasus gave her the fingers of the hands.
Nose was provided by Kuber.
The rays from Prajaapati formed the teeth.
Agni provided the three eyes.
Sandhyaa gave her eyebrows and
Vaayu provided the ears.

Thus the Devee was formed from the rays of thousands of gods. At that point the gods thought that this is not enough and she needs weapons and other articles too. So each one gave different articles.

Mahaadev gave her Trishool.
Krishn gave her Sudarshan Chakra.
Varun gave her a conch and a rope.
Agni gave her Shakti (Power).
Vaayu gave her a bow and arrow.
Indra gave Vajraayudh, Airaavat (White elephant) and gong.
Yam gave her staff from Kaal Dand.
Prajaapati gave her an Aksh Maalaa
Brahmaa gave her Kamandal.
Sun gave her his radiance.
Kaal gave her his sword and beautiful skin.
The milky ocean gave her a nice necklace ,dress, and divine jewel, earrings and bracelet, crescent Moon, rings for fingers.
Vishwakarmaa gave her an axe and other special arrows that could pierce anything and a shield which could not be broken. He also provided garland to be worn on the head. Mounatain god gave her lion as vehicle and different precious stones.
Kuber gave her drinking pot.
Shesh Naag gave her a garland made of highly precious and divine stone.

Similarly others also gave her different articles that shall increase her power and radiance. Thus formed the most beautiful and most brilliant and powerful Devee Durgaa.
