21-Devee Peeth

According to Chaatushpeeth Tantra there are four Devee Peeth - these Peeth are situated in four corners of India -
(1) Kaam Roop - In East there is Kaameshwaree Devee of Kaam Roop. Kaam Roop is in modern day Aasaam and is a very famous Teerth there.
(2) Poorn Giri - Poorneshwaree Devee of Poorn Shail (South) is worshipped in Usmaanaabaad in the foothills of Tulajaapur mountain as "Bhavaanee of Tulajaapur". It is situated towards the North-East of Sholaapur.
(3) Odiyaan - Odiyaan's Devee Kaatyaayanee is situated in Western India.
(4) Jaalandhar - Jaalandhar Peeth's Devee Jwaalaamukhee is situated in Himaachal. There is a large brass vessel on Jwaalaa Devee Temple, it is believed that it was offered by Emperor Akbar.

It is difficult to say that when Devee worship got started. There is a mention of Devee poojaa in Mahaabhaarat times. There is a mention of Prajaapati Vedee and Yagya Sthalee also which is worshipped in the Devee form today. In Prayaag, in Alopee Devee's temple, there is only a Vedee there in place of Brahmaa's Moorti.

In Van Parv, 186/20-30 (MBH), Vyaas Jee asks Devee her own introduction, so Saraswatee Jee says - "Hey Dwijendra, Whatever wooden, or iron or clay pots are used by Ritwik in Yagya; and whatever sacred Karm they do and whatever Karm they recommend, I, Saraswatee, grow from them only. Hey Learned sage, One gets Siddhi only from my that Roop (form) and Pragyaa. I am Saraswatee in Vidyaa form."

Various scriptures accept only Durgaa as Aadi Shakti (initial Power) and have described her with numerous names and sung her praise. She has been accepted with many names all over India. A description of her Roop, names and powers comes in MBH when krishn commands Arjun to read Durgaa Stotra before the commencement of MBH war. These are some of the names mentioned in MBH, Viraat Parv, 6/1-25 when Yudhishthir pray to Durgaa - Vishnupriyaa, Lakshmee, Aakaashchaarinee, Mahishaasur mardinee, Vindhyavaasinee, Kaalee, Mahaakaalee, Bhagavatee, Durgaa, Keerti, Dhriti, Siddhi, Lajjaa, Vidyaa....

In Bheeshm Parv, 23/1-20, Krishn asks Arjun to obtain a boon from her Kaatyaayanee Roop - Kaalee, Kapaalee, Kapilaa, Krishn Pingalaa, Taarinee, Var Varninee, Bhadrakaalee, Mahaakaalee, Chandee, Chandroopinee, Kaatyaayanee, Mahaabhaagaa, Karaalee, Vijayaa, Jayaa, Mayoorpichchh Dhwajaadhaarinee, Kaushikee, Umaa, Shaakumbharee, Shwetaa, Krishnaa, Kaitabh-naashinee, Hiranyaakshee, Viroopaakshee, Skand Jananee, Swaahaa, Swadhaa, Kalaa, Kaashthaa, Saraswatee, Saavitree, Ved Maataa...

Durgaa bestowed a boon to Yudhishthir that they will not be recognized in Viraat Nagar.

Kalikaa Puraan mentions Devee's 7 Peeth.
Rudra Yaamal Tantra also mentions Devee's Peeth, but 10 Peeth
Gyaanaavarn Tantra mentions more than 45 Devee Peeth, and
In Padm Puraan their number goes up to 108.
