36-Vindaa Muhoort

Back to Notes

Vindaa Muhoort
[Taken from Valmiki Ramayan, 3/68]

Muhoort is a very short period of time, about half an hour or so (precisely 24 minutes), which is regarded as auspicious or un-auspicious to initiate that action. Auspicious Muhoort are sought to perform Shubh (auspicious) actions like marriages, naming ceremony, Upnayan Sanskaar, even traveling, starting education of a child etc etc.

The daytime has fifteen Muhoort (spells of time) that have their own effects on humans. These fifteen Muhoort are: (1) Raudra, (2) Swet, (3) Maitra, (4) Sarabhatt, (5) Saavitro (6) Vaishwadevaa, (7) Gandharv  (8) Kutap, (9) Rauhinaa, (10) Tilak, (11) Vijato, (12) Nairitih, (13) Shambaro, (14) Varun, and (15) Bhag.

The Vijaya (Vijato) named Muhoort, the 11th one, said above is also called as "Vindaa" the eleventh spell of the day. Any action initiated in this spell of the day entails adverse effects, in so far as that aim and action, on the initiator. Surprisingly enough Raavan, though an eminent astrologer, he has written an astrological treatise called "Raavan Sanhitaa" also, did not care about it .
