Vrishparvaa
See also       Shukraachaarya,      Yayaati

Vrishparvaa was the son of Maharshi Kashyap and Danu - Daksh's one of 13 daughters married to Kashyap Jee. He had many very well known Daanav as his brothers. He was the king of Daitya. Vishnu Puraan, 1/13 says that he had three daughters - Sharmishthaa, Upadaanee, and Hayashiraa. Shukraachaarya was his Kul Guru as well as the Guru of Daitya.

Shukraachaarya had a daughter named Devayaanee. Both Sharmishthaa and Devayaanee were good friends. Once they were playing in a pond with their friends, they saw Naarad Jee coming to that side. All came out of the pond in respect and started putting on their clothes. In a hurry, Sharmishthaa put on Devayaanee's clothes. At this Devayaanee got very angry with Sharmishthaa. Sharmishthaa tried to explain to her that it was in hurry, but Devayaane considered it as her insult and said some unjust words to her. At this Sharmishthaa pushed her in a well and came back home. Luckily that well was dry. Devayaanee cried for help.

By chance Raajaa Yayaati was out for hunting and was passing by that side. He was thirsty and was looking for water. Seeing a well nearby he wanted to draw water from it but instead of water he got a girl. He took out the girl. She was without clothes, so Raajaa gave her his own clothes to cover her body. On asking how she fell in that well, Devayaanee told him the whole story and requested him that "since he has seen her in this condition first, no one else should see her like this, so he should marry her". Although this marriage was not according to Dharm, still considering his fate he accepted her his wife.

When Shukraachaarya came to know about this incident he also got angry with Vrishparvaa and resigned from his Kul Guru position. Vrishparvaa requested him to stay back. Shukraachaarya got ready to stay back if he would fulfill his daughter's conditions whatever she said. His daughter's condition was that when she would get married, Sharmishthaa and her friends should go with her as her maids. Seeing the delicacy of the occasion Sharmishthaa had to accept this condition and when Devayaanee got married to Raajaa Yayaati, she also went with Devayaanee as her maid along with her friends.
