13-Shiv and Vishnu

There was a battle between Devtaa (gods) and Daanav. Daanav had become very strong. Devtaa faced problems in facing Daanav. They understood that they will have to grow stronger if they want to defeat Daanav. So they decided to seek the shelter of Vishnu. All Devtaa went to Vaikunth, the divine abode of Vishnu. They prayed Him for help and protection.

Daanav were great devotees of Shiv, so Vishnu decided that He must take blessings from Shiv. So He went to the mount Kailaash where Shiv lived. He created a Shiv Ling from fire, a Jyotirling, and started worshipping it. This Shiv Ling is known as Hareshwar (God of Hari means Vishnu).  He started to do Tapasyaa and Upaasanaa for blessings of Shiv. He started worshipping this Shiv Ling with Shiv Sahastra Naam (One Thousand names of Shiv). And with each name of Shiv he offered one lotus flower to his Ling. Thus Vishnu offered one thousand lotus flowers every day with utter devotion. Shiv was very happy Vishnu's such great devotion.

One day he decided to test Vishnu and one of the lotus flowers got disappeared. When Vishnu had offered 999 lotuses, and He found that one lotus was fewer, Vishnu was so much involved in his Poojaa that He did not have time to get another flower immediately. He thought and thought and came to conclusion that people say that His eyes were like lotus flowers, so he decided to offer Shiv His own eye.

He, at once took out one of his eyes and offered His Netra Kamal to Shiv. Shiv was very much touched by His this action. He appeared at once and gifted Sudarshan Chakra to Vishnu. He told Him that this Chakra (Divine Discus) will always be effective on all. After that Vishnu used Sudarshan Chakra for protection for all the three Lok (world) : Swarg (Heaven), Prithvi (Earth) and Paataal (Nether). This event is described very well in great Stotra created by Gandharv Pushpadant known as Shiv Mahimn Stotra.
