Shankh in Hindu Scriptures

Shaastra say that bones are impure, but Shankh are super pure.

According to scriptures, there us a story behind Heeraa Shankh. There lived a poor woman named Heeraa Ujjwal in a village in North-East India. Gangaa River used to flow there. She was great devote  of Vishnu and Lakshmee. Once there spread an epidemic and many people dies in that village and in its vicinity. her two sons and their wives also affected with that epidemic. To save her family and other villagers, she was told in dream to keep fast and worship Vishnu and Lakshmee. Soon Vishnu appeared before her and assured that soon the epidemic will be over, but she should worship Dakshinaamoorti Shankh as lakshmee gets pleased with the worship of Dakshinaamoorti Shankh. Soon the villages were free from the epidemic and all became healthy. One great wave of sea came and took away all the Yagya material away with it. At this Heeraa Ujjwal became angry and she cursed Sea that he should go away from there and there should be plain there. The sea wave receded and now many species of Dakshinaavartee Shankh are found there, as they could not go with the sea wave.

Since the species was in danger, Varun Dev prayed Lakshmee Jee to do something to preserve them. Lakshmee Jee appearedd before Heeraa Ujwal and asked her to take her curse back. Heraa Ujjwal said to Lakshmee Jee - "My Shankh have turned back into stones, how can I continue my worship?" Lakshmee Jee aid - "From now onward Dakshinaavartee Shankh will give fortune whoever will worship them, but they will be fewer in quantity as many of them had turned into stones." She further said - "All the Shankh which have been turned into stones will be known as Heeraa Shankh from  today."

The worshipper of Heera Shankh will be blessed immense fortune and luck if the Jap of Lakshmee Mantra will be done using the Sphatik Maalaa. The Heera Shankh will be most beautiful Shankh that can happen by virtue of presence of different colored gems and precious stones and can take the devotee to the Lakshmee Siddhi.
