Bheem and Dhritraashtra
When the war was over, the Paandav came to Hastinaapur to greet their great father and mother, Dhritraashtra and Gaandhaaree. Krishn knew that Dhritraashtra was especially angry with Bheem because he was the one who killed his all 100 sons, especially his dearest son Duryodhan, and because he was the one who cruelly drank his son Dushaasan's chest's blood.

So He said to Paandav to make a life-like brass statue of Bheem. Yudhishthir asked "Why", at this Krishn said - "You don't know, Dhritraashtra is very powerful, and he is very angry with Bheem. I am sure, he would like to embrace Bheem as he would meet him, and he is still very powerful, he might crush him. So we will present this statue first if he will try to embrace Bheem. This will save Bheem's life."

The same thing happened as Krishn thought. When Paandav arrived in the palace to greet Dhritraashtra, first Krishn asked others to greet him. When Dhritraashtra had already met others, he asked with restlessness, "Where is Bheem?" Bheem touched his feet and just stood in front of him. But he said - "I want to embrace you, Bheem, come near me." Immediately Krishn put that statue forward, and when Dhritraashtra embraced it, it indeed cracked in his arms. Dhritraashtra said to Bheem - "Bheem, Your body has become extra hard this time."

All Paandav were just stunned to see this. After embracing the statue Dhritraashtra got very sad and started weeping that he had killed Bheem, then Krishn consoled him and presented real Bheem to him. He got relieved feeling him alive.

Bheem and Others
(1) Padm Puran, 1/7 says that Kashyap's wife Krodhvashaa gave birth to Krodhvash Raakshas group and Bheem killed 1 million Raakshas from them.

(2) According to one legend of Khaatu Shyaam, Bheem met his grandson, Barabareek, the son of Ghatotkach, after losing everything in the Dice Game. Proud of his might, he enter into a fight with him and got defeated. Then Shiv appeared there with Devee and introduced him as his grandson. Thus both met each other and Barabareek also met his family members.

Character of Bheem in Mahaabhaarat
taken from  http://anandatirtha.wordpress.com/parampare/the-greatness-of-bhima/

Madhwaachaarya is supposed to be the incarnation of Bheem, and Bheem was the Avataar of Mukhya Praan - the next Brahmaa in line. Among Paandav he represented Gyaan (knowledge). He had 24 wives, out of them 20 were the daughters of Vasudev (Krishn's father - means they were Krishn's sisters).

This information is new to me.

He was the next great hero after Krishn. he was the real follower of Bhaagvat Dharm that is why he never violated Krishn's words, not even once. Although he had enormous strength and knowledge, still he was very polite and humility. In Udyog Parv, when Krishn collects opinion of the Paandav before going to Hastinaapur as a Peace Messenger, and Bheem describes his own, Krishn says that in fact he had 1000 times more capabilities than what he had described.

Before the war Yudhishthir gave up the hope of getting his kingdom back and was ready to spend his life in forest, the same was done  by Arjun also just before commencing the war, but Bheem brought Yudhishthir back to fight and so Krishn brought back Arjun to fight.

He was the first person to attack when the MBH war started, and the last person to fight after killing Duryodhan. He killed 6 Akshauhinee army of Kaurav out of 11 Akshauhinee army.

Even in the game of Dice, Bheem alone raises his voice at the top to oppose Kaurav. Bheem killed all the sons of Dhritraashtra alone. The only Vaishnav killed by Bheem was Baahleek, and that also on his request before starting the war, otherwise all others were followers of Kali (Duryodhan)
