Samvatsar Deep Vrat

Naarad Jee said - "Bhagavan, Now you tell me about Samvatsar Deep named Vrat method by doing which all sins are destroyed, fruit of all Vrat is gotten, and our all wishes are fulfilled." Mahaadev Jee said - "I tell you a very secret thing by hearing that even a meanest person can get eternal Moksh. He uplifts his 100 generations and goes to Vishnu Lok. In the month of Maargsheersh (Agahan) on an auspicious Ekaadashee day, get up in the morning, and finish his daily chores. Worship Lakshmee Naaraayan with Dhoop, Deep and Naivedya; and pray Him to please with him. Then establish a new pitcher filled with Ghee or oil in front of Lakshmee Naaraayan, put one pot of copper or clay, and put a very thick, about nine strand thick, wicker. Then light it with the Sankalp that "I have vowed to light it for one year, may Vishnu be pleased with me." On that day, read Ved etc, keep fast the whole day, in the night also read scriptures. Next day feed a Braahman and worship him according to one's capacity.

When one year has passed, invite Braahman - 12 Braahman are the best, 6 Braahman are medium, and 3 Braahman are minimum, one of them should be a couple. After worshipping the couple with food, clothes, ornaments etc, donate Bhagavaan's idol and the lamp along with the pitcher to them. Feed Kheer with Ghee and sweets to other Braahman also, give all Braahman Dakshinaa, then eat food along with his relations and friends at the end of this Vrat. Who does Deep Daan, he gets beauty, wealth, Gyaan, comforts, wife, sons, grandsons etc. An unmarried girl gets a good husband and sons, grandsons and long life. A married woman never becomes widow by doing this Vrat. Who move the wicker with a needle they also attain Parampad. Who begs for the oil of this Deep (lamp); or who looks at at with folding hands with Shraddhaa; who advises others to do it, they also get free from sins and go to Vishnu Lok.

Jayantee Janmaashtamee Vrat

Naarad Jee said - "Now you tell me some other Vrat." Mahaadev Jee said - "There has been a Chakravartee king named Harishchandra. Pleased with him Brahmaa Jee gave him a city. Once the King thought, "Nobody else has got such a kingdom before, nobody else has not ridden on such a Vimaan before, what Karm I did that I got such comforts like Indra." He rode on his Vimaan and flew in the sky. He saw Meru Parvat and on it he saw Sanat Kumaar who was sitting on a golden rock. He got down there to clear his doubts. Both greeted each other and the King asked him his question.

Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "You were a truth speaker and cleansed Vaishya in your previous life. You abandoned your work so your relations and friends also abandoned you, only your wife accompanied you. You went to forest along with her. There you saw some lotus flowers bloomed in a pond. You plucked some flowers from there and went to Kaashee Puree on foot. There you tried to sell those lotus flowers, but nobody bought them. At the same time you heard the sound of some musical instruments, so you headed towards it. There you saw its King Indradyumn's daughter Chandraavatee doing Jayantee Janmaashtamee Vrat. You went there and saw the method of doing that. She was worshipping Hari established on a pitcher. You also worshipped Shree Hari and offered Him your lotus flowers there. Chandraavatee got very happy to see this and wanted to give you some money, but you didn't take it. She wanted to give you food, but you didn't take that also. This was the only Punya of your previous life."

Harishchandra said - "On which day that Vrat is done and how it is done, tell me that." Sanat Kumaar Jee said - "In Bhaadrapad month, on Krishn Ashtamee, if there is Rohinee Nakshatra, it is called Jayantee Janmaashtamee. Brahmaa Jee told me that on that day, one should keep fast, take bath with sesame seed mixed water, establish a new pitcher and put Panch-Ratn (five gems - diamond, pearl, Vaidoorya, yellow sapphire, and blue sapphire). Keep a golden pot on the pitcher, and keep a golden idol of Yashodaa Jee (Yashodaa is feeding Krishn, Krishn is sucking her one breast and is holding her other breast, and is looking at His mother). Besides this, make a golden idol of Rohinee and silver idol of Chandramaa. Chandramaa should be equal to thumb, and Rohinee should be 4-finger tall. Cover Bhagavaan with two white clothes, offer Naivedya of variety of foods and fruits and worship Him. Then worship Guru and finish the worship.

After Indra had finished 100 Yagya, he asked his Guru Brihaspati - "By which Daan one can increase all kinds of comforts? Tell me that which is eternal also." Brihaspati Jee said - "Indra, Who donates gold, clothes, cow and land, he becomes free from all sins. Donation of the land equal to only one Go-Charm is eternal - till this Prithvi remains with this sea. Cow, land and Vidyaa (knowledge) - these three donations are said to be the greatest Daan. They uplift one by milking, sowing seed and practice respectively. This Prithvi has been under many kings' control and will be under many kings' control, but whoever donates it, only he gets the fruit of its donation. There is no other Punyavaan than the person who donates land; and no other greater sinner than the person who snatched other's land. Gold is the first child of Agni Dev; Prithvi has appeared from the part of Vishnu; and cows are the daughters of Soorya Dev; that is why whoever donates gold, land and cow, he enjoys the eternal fruits of their donation. Who takes away Braahman's wealth, land or anything, he destroys his everything.

Who donates, he gets wealth; who protects life, his life is successful; who follows A-Hinsaa, he gets beauty, prosperity and health; who eats fruits and roots, he gets honor; who takes bath three times a day, he becomes beautiful; who lives on air, he gets the fruit of Yagya; and he who keeps fast, lives in Swarg for long time.

Dasharath Pleases Shani

Naarad Jee asked - "How the pains given by Shani can be pacified?" Mahaadev Jee said - "Shani is great deadly planet. In earlier times, there was a king named Dasharath in Raghu Vansh. He was a Chakravartee King. His astrologers came to know that Shani is reaching at the end of Krittikaa Nakshatra, so they said to the King, - "Now Shani will be proceeding through Rohinee Nakshatra, and this presents a terrible "Shaakatbhed" named Yog (combination) which is dangerous for Devtaa as well as for Asur. This will create a great famine for 12 long years." The King asked them, "Then what to do?" Vashishth Jee said - "This Rohinee is Brahmaa's Nakshatra, if it will be pierced, then how people will survive? Even Brahmaa and Indra also do not have any remedy for it."

Dasharath started thinking, and then went to Nakshatra Mandal carrying his all kinds of weapons riding on his chariot. Rohinee is 125,000 Yojan above Soorya. There he drew the string of his bow and put "Sanhaar Astra" on it. This Astra was very dangerous for Devtaa and Asur. Shani got afraid of that Astra, but said smilingly, "Your bravery is admirable. When anybody comes in my sight, he is burned to ashes, but you escaped. Ask what do you want to ask for?" Dasharath said - "Shani Dev, Till this Prithvi exists along with the rivers, mountains, sea, Soorya, Chandramaa, do not proceed through Rohinee. Besides never make a famine for 12 years." Shani Dev said - "So be it."

Dasharath got thrilled to get these Var, he threw bow and arrow on the chariot and prayed him very earnestly. Shani Dev got very pleased with his prayer ( Shani Stotra is given on p 636 of the Puraan), so he said - "I am very pleased with you, ask for any Var, I will give it to you." Dasharath said - "Dev, From today you please do not hurt anybody - Devtaa, Asur, human being, animal, bird, and Naag." Shani Dev said - "If I sit in Death House, Birth House (ascendant), or 4th House of any Devtaa, Asur, human being, Siddh, Vidyaadhar and Raakshas birth chart, then I will be the cause of his death. But who will donate Urad-Bhaat mixed with sesame seed; or iron; or black cow, or black bull to Braahman after worshipping my iron statue with Shamee leaves and will worship me with this Stotra on my day (Saturday), and will read this Stotra even after worshipping me, I will never afflict him. I will protect him in all Gochar, birth Lagna, Dashaa, and Antar-Dashaa. By this method the whole world can be pain free. Thus I have given you this Var with cleverness."

Mahaadev Jee said - "Hey Naarad, King Dasharath got blessed by getting these three Var, and he came back to his city. So whoever reads this Stotra on Saturday in the morning and who ever listens to it, he becomes free from sins and goes to Swarg Lok."
