King Dileep

Vaishya asked - "Hey Muni, Who was this King Dileep, and who is this Nandinee whose worship gave him a son? After hearing this story I will worship Paarvatee Jee." Deval Jee said - "There has been a great King named Dileep in Vaivaswat Manu's lineage. He pleased his people by all means. His wife's name was Sudakshinaa. Even after a long time passed, they did not have a child. Dileep thought, "I have not sinned so far, then why I do not have a son. Let me go to our Guru Vashishth Jee and ask him." So both the King and the queen went to Vashishth Jee in he evening. He was sitting comfortably that the King greeted him and his queen greeted Arundhatee. Vashishth Jee felicitated both with good food.

Then he took the King's hand in his own hand and said - "Where all people are happy and religious, warriors are skilled in warfare, what will the King of such a kingdom do of Swarg? Kings of Ikshwaaku family used to come to forest after handing over their kingdom to their sons, but you are still young. You have not yet seen your son's face, then why have you come here in Tapo Van?" The King said - "Brahman, I have not come here to do Tapasyaa. As the childhood has gone, this youth will also pass and the old age will come. If I will die without a son then who will take care of this Prithvi after me? Which fault of mine is responsible for this? Tell me that." Vashishth Jee meditated for a while and said - "It happened long before that when you were returning to your palace, you ignored Kaamdhenu standing in the way under the Kalp Vriksh and did not greet her. That is Kaamdhenu got angry and she cursed you that "Until you serve my child, you will not have son. So you, along with your wife, serve my Nandinee (Kaamdhenu's daughter's daughter) along with her calf. She will give you son."

At the same time Nandinee came to Aashram. Pointing to her, Muni said - "See, She does good just by remembering, that is why she has come to this Aashram now. So you serve her in the Tapo Van and when she comes back in Aashram, Queen Sudakshinaa should serve her." The King obeyed him.

Deval Jee said - "Next morning when Sudakshinaa has worshipped Nandinee, Kin Dileep took her for grazing in the forest. He followed her like a shadow. If she sat, he sat; if she drank water, he also drank water; he fed her tender green grass; fanned her to remove flies and mosquitoes from her body. When in the evening she came back to Aashram, Queen Sudakshinaa worshipped her. Thus 21 days passed serving her. After this to test the Bhakti of the King towards her, Nandinee entered a cave of Himaalaya. There a lion came and attacked her, Nandinee cried loudly, he immediately aimed an arrow at the lion, the then the lion looked at the King and his whole body got paralyzed. He could not release the arrow. He got very surprised to see this.

The King got more surprised when he heard the lion speaking in human voice - "Raajan, I know you, you are King Dileep born in Soorya Vansh. You should not be surprised at being paralyzed because around here, in Himaalaya, Shankar Jee's Maayaa is spread. You cannot attack me as you do with other lions, because Bhagavaan Shankar sit on his Vrishabh by putting his foot on me. Now you go back and protect your own body. God has sent this cow for my food."

The King Dileep aid - "O Lion, This is our Guru's cow Nandinee, and he has set my responsibility to serve her. I have worshipped her properly till now, she is a mother of a young calf. You have caught her in the cave of a mountain. You are the servant of Shankar Jee so it is impossible for me to get her released from you forcefully. My body has become sinful with defame that is why I offer my body to you for eating in exchanging of this cow. This will solve the problem - Muni's daily activities will not be disturbed and you will also be satisfied. Besides I will also good Gati saving a cow."

Hearing this the lion became quiet. The King lay down facing downward in front of him. He was expecting the attack of the lion that he felt the touch of flowers showered by Devtaa. He heard, "Son, Get up." When got up he saw only Nandinee, the lion had disappeared. Nandinee said - "Raajan, I used this Maayaa lion just only to test you. By the grace of Muni, even Yam Raaj cannot think of catching me. You protected me even after giving your body, I am very pleased with you, ask, what do wish for?" The King said - "Nothing is hidden from Devee like you. You know my wish, please bestow me with a son to carry my name." Nandinee said - "Son, You make a bowl of leaves, milk me in that bowl, and drink it. This will give you a son who will be good at all kinds of weapons. Hearing this Dileep said - "Mother, I am contented by your sweet words at this time. I will take your milk in the Aashram with the remaining milk from religious Karm."

Nandinee got very happy to hear Dileep. They both came to Aashram. Sudakshinaa saw the King's face happy, so she thought that they have got the fruit of their Tapasyaa. They took the cow to Vashishth Jee. Vashishth said - "I knew that the cow is pleased with you that is why your faces are so happy. Both Kaamdhenu and Kalp Vriksh fulfill the desires, so there is no wonder if her grand-daughter has fulfilled your desire. Today you spent your night here serving the cow. Tomorrow you finish your Vrat and go to Ayodhyaa."

Deval Jee said - "So the King and the Queen passed that day on Muni's Aashram, and next day they went to Ayodhyaa. After some time Dileep had the son named Raghu, by whose name this family is known as Raghu Vansh. Who reads this Kathaa on Prithvi, he gets wealth and children. Sharabh, You also go to Paaravtee Jee with your wife and please her. She will surely give you sinless son." After that he told them the method of Ambikaa worship and went away."

Post Script

Shiv Sharmaa said - "Vishnu, Sharabh Vaishya then worshipped Paarvatee Jee. She got very pleased with his worship. She appeared before him in person and said - "Vaishya, I am very pleased with your Bhakti. I give you the son. Now you go to Khaandav Van. There is a holy Teerth named Indraprasth, and there is a Teerth named Nigamodwodhak, established by Brihaspati Jee, you take bath in that Teerth with the desire of son. You will surely get son."

Sharabh came to this Teerth, took bath with the desire of son, donated 100 cows, stayed there for 7 days and then came back to their house. In the same month, his wife got pregnant and then I was born. When I had grown, my father said to me - "Now you take care of the house, I am going to forest." I told him several times that Gangaa was flowing there, he should not go anywhere leaving it, so he stayed back. He took bath in Gangaa River three times a day and heard Puraan's Kathaa. One day he heard about Nigamodwodhak Teerth, since then he started living here. After some time he had a terrible fever. Hearing this I also went there. When he was standing inside water of the Teerth, he died. Vishnu Himself came and took him to Vaikunth Dhaam. After doing his last rites, I also came here and now live here with the desire of Moksh."

Hearing Shiv Sharmaa, his son Vishnu Sharmaa said - "Inspite of living in such a great Teerth, why did you have to take birth again? Why didn't you attain Mukti?" Shiv Sharmaa said - "One day I was meditating on Bhagavaan that Maharshi Durvaasaa came to my Aashram. Seeing me quiet, he cursed me - "Your desire will not fulfill in this life." I prayed him long, then he said - "You will be born as a Braahman and die here. After that you will not be born again." After that I came back. After some time I died on the banks of Gangaa River. According to Durvaasaa Rishi I was born in a Braahman family, now I will die here and go to Vaikunth Dhaam."

Naarad Jee said - "Hey King Shibi, Thus after telling about their previous lives to each other, both started living there and when the time came both went to Vaikunth Dhaam."
