Earth's Motions

There are four motions of the Earth. Daily rotation centering on Earth's axis or the Pole Star (North Star) or Dhruv Taaraa or sometimes called even Brahm being at Vishnu Naabhi. If the daily sky is observed with the North Star as the highest point in the sky, the sky is thought as a mountain known mythologically as Sumeru Parvat. Thus it is said that Brahmaa Jee creates the world sitting on top of Meru Parvat. The Sun, Moon and all the stars are seen from there as going around this mountain every day as it were going around the Pole Star as the center of the sky. This is the concept of Brahmaa Jee in our religion. It is upon this concept that Lagna (Ascendant) of the Jyotishee (astrologers) is based with every thing rising in the East and traveling to the West but centering on the Pole Star.

The other three motions are annual, monthly and precessional. The Annual Motion is that which gives us the 12 Bhaav (Houses) of the birth chart (horoscope). The Sun is thought of as being on different Raashi (Sign) when the circle is divided into 12 equal Raashi each month. The months are actually lunar and there are 12 full lunar months which are responsible for the Bhaav (House). Thus we also have to consider Chandra Raashi, although reduced to the position of the Moon, say at the time of birth. These Bhaav although annual in nature is reduced to the day by the Jyotishee by the time of rising or Lagna, every day.

The Monthly Motion of the Earth is along with the Moon. Because the Earth cannot balance gravitationally without itself going round a small circle. This small circle of the Earth is known as the monthly wobble of the Earth. This monthly wobble of the earth is the circle of Maya the Mlechch. Earth's gravitation is known as Maya as it pulls us all towards itself as it were in love. It is just a philosophical word equivalent to the force of Earth's gravitation. The center of the Earth's monthly wobble is known as Purush or Ansh Purush in Soorya Siddhaant. It is known as Bary center of the Earth and the Moon in science. This is the third motion of the Earth.
