Maun

Keeping quiet. Not speaking. Maun is the vow of silence. It is absolutely necessary for a spiritual life. Much energy is wasted by idle gossiping and tall talk. All energies must be conserved and transmuted into Ojas-Shakti. This will help you in meditation.

If circumstances prevent you to observe Maun, strictly avoid long talk, big talk, tall talk, all unnecessary talks, all sorts of vain debates and discussions etc, and withdraw yourself from society as much as possible. If this energy is conserved by Maun, it will be transmuted into Ojas-Shakti, which will be of immense use in your Saadhanaa. Speech is Tejomaya according to Chhaandogya Upanishad. The gross portion of fire goes to constitute bone; the middle portion to form marrow; and the subtle portion to form speech. So speech is a very powerful energy. Remember this. Remember this always.

Observe Maun for one year or six months. If you cannot do for months continuously, observe the vow of silence at least for a day in the week, just as Mahaatmaa Gandhi  did. You must draw the inspiration from Mahatma, like Sri Krishna Ashram Maharaj who is now living absolutely nude for the last eight years in the icy regions of Himalayas. He is observing Kaashtha Maun, a rigid vow of silence, for the last eight years. In Kaashtha Maun, you should not communicate your thoughts to others even in writing or by signs. Why not you also become a Krishna Ashram of wide reputation and glory?

When the Indriya (senses) are silent, it is termed Indriya Maun or Karan Maun. When you keep the body steady and immovable, it is termed Kaashthaa Maun. In Sushupti Avasthaa (deep slumber state) there is Sushupti Maun. The real Maun comes only when there is absence of duality and separation, when all mental modifications cease. This is Mahaa Mauna. It is Par Brahm.

First one can practice Maun for a short duration initially, then one can prolong the time gradually and observe Maun for longer time. However during the observation of Maun, if one can, he should keep his eyes closed or involve in reading a book or do his domestic chores without talking or need for any kind of clarification. The real Maun comes only when there is absence of duality and separation, when all mental modifications cease. This is known as Mahaa Maun. It is Par Brahm.

More serious meaning of Maun is that one stops energy wasted not only by our tongue but by our mind too. Although when we speak or do not speak, our mind is always talking mentally. Even during sleep it doesn't stop. The mind always forms words or ideas, it never stops working. Our aim should be to gradually silence this talking mind. Now if you can do your domestic chores without moving your tongue its well and good, but it is only physical Maun. From this physical Maun one has to proceed towards Maanasik Maun (mental silence). Practicing on and on physical Maun we will see the thought waves in our mind also thinning out. Benefits of Maun can be greatly felt during meditation and also a calmness of mind at all times distinctly felt. As we are physical beings, it is good or suitable for us to start the practice from the physical plane and then move on to Maanasik and other subtle planes. Like it is said Dhyaan with form is necessary to be practiced for a considerable period before moving on to formless Dhyaan.
