Some Vaidik Proofs
"krittikaa nakshatram agnir devataa...rohinee nakshatram prajaapatir devataa, mrigsheershe nakshatre somo devataa, aardraa nakshatram rudro devataa, punarvasu nakshatram aditir devataa, tishyo nakshatram brihaspatir devataa, shresha nakshatram sarp devataa, maghaa nakshatra pitro devataa, phaalgunee nakshatram aryamaa devataa, phaalguni nakshatram bhago devataa, hasto nakshatra savitaa devataa, chitraa nakshatram indro devataa, swaati nakshatram vaayur devataa, vishaakhe nakshatram indraagni devataa, anuraadhaa nakshatram mitro devataa, rohinee nakshatram indro devataa, vichritav nakshatram pitro devataa, aashaadhaa nakshatram aapo devataa, aashaadhaa nakshatram vishwedeva devataa, shrona nakshatram vishnurdevataa, shravishtham vaasavo devataa, shatabhisham nakshatra mindro devataa, proshthapada nakshatram aja eka-pad devataa, revatee nakshatram pooshaa devataa, ashwayujav nakshatram ashwinav devataa, bharanee nakshatram yamo devata..."
[Taitiriya Samhita 4/4/10]

Then again, in the Vedaang Jyotish, Mantra 25 to 27 - all the 27 Naksahtra, starting from Krittikaa, have been enumerated and listed by the names of presiding deities (and not Nakshatra). These are:
"agnih prajaapatih somo rudrro aditir brihaspatih
sarpashchai pitarashchaiva, bhagashchaiv aryamapi cha
savitaa twashtashcha vaayuschendragnee mitra eva chai
indro nirritiraapav vai vishvedevas tathaiva chai
vishnurvaruno vasavo ajaikpaat tathaiva chai
ahirbudnyastatha pusha ashvinav yama eva chai"

As per the Vedaang Jyotish, the 5th Mantra, the year started from Winter Solstice, but the Nakshatra started from Krittikaa Nakshatra. We find a similar trend in the Ved also. They are quite unrelated to the names of months etc.
