Narak

Hell. Region of Yam Raaj - the judge of of men and Ruler of the Hells in which the wicked suffer. Hells are terrible places where the sinners are sent to suffer for their sins. There are many kinds of such Narak.

According to Padm Puraan, 5/32, 28 Koti (levels) of Narak are told - There are 28 grades of Narak below this Earth, they all are situated in a dense dark place below the 7th Tal (Paataal Lok) -
(1) Ghoraa, (2) Sughoraa, (3) Atighoraa, (4) Mahaaghoraa, (5) Ghor-roopaa, (6) Taraltaaraa, (7) Bhayaanakaa,
(8) Kaal Raatri, (9) Bhayotkataa, (10) Chandaa, (11) Mahaachandaa, (12) Chandkolaahalaa, (13) Prachandaa,
(14) Narnaayikaa, (15) Karaalaa, (16) Vikaraalaa, (17) Vajraa - there are three more (18, 19, and 20), (21) Trikonaa,
(22) Panchkonaa, (23) Sudeerghaa, (24) Parivartulaa, (25) Saptbhaumaa, (26) Ashtbhaumaa, (27) Deeptaa, and (28) Maayaa. Thus these 28 Koti of Narak are told.

Even these Narak have 5 Naayak each (their names are also given there).

According to Agni Puraan, Ch 371, p 817, there are 28 Koti (levels) of Narak. Their names are given like this - (1) Ghoraa, (2) Sughoraa, (3) Atighoraa, (4) Mahaaghoraa, (5) Ghor-roopaa, (6) Taraltaaraa, (7) Bhayaanakaa, (8) Bhayotkataa, (9) Kaalraatri, (10) Mahaachandaa, (11) Chandaa, (12) Kolaahalaa, (13) Prachandaa, (14) Padmaa, (15) narak Naayikaa, (16) Padmaavatee, (17) Bheeshanaa, (18) B heemaa, (19) Karaalikaa, (20) Vikaraalaa, (21) Mahaavajraa, (22) Trikonaa, (23) Panch Konikaa, (24) Sudeerghaa, (25) Vartulaa, (26) Saptbhoomaa, (27) Subhoomikaa, and (28) Deept Maayaa.

All of them have 5 Naayak each, and again they have 5 Naayak each. They are known as Raurav etc names. Thus they all are 145. Taamistra, Andh Taamistra, Mahaaraurav, Raurav, Asipatra Van, Loh Bhaar, Kaalsootra Narak, Mahaa Narak, Sanjeevan, Mahaa Veechi, Tapan, Samprataapan, Sanghaat, Kaakol, Kudmal, Poot Mrityuk, Loh Shanku, Rijeesh, Pradhaan, Shaalmali tree, and Vaitaranee river etc all should be considered as Koti-Naayak. They are very terrible.

According to Naarad Puraan - Yam told Bhageerath about sins, and the various Narak (Hells) where sinners have to suffer. The names of some such hells are ----
(1) Tapan,  (2) Valukakumbha,  (3) Raurav,  (4) Mahaa-Raurav,  (5) Kumbheepaak,  (6) Niruchchvash, (7) Kaal-Sootra, 
(8)  Pramardan,  (9) Bheeshan, (10) Asipatravana,  (11) Laal Bhakshya,  (12) Himotkat,  (13) Mrishaavasthaa, 
(14) Vasaa-koop,  (15) Shvabha-kshya,  (16) Mutrapana,  (17) Purishahrada,  (18) Tapta Shool, (19) Tapta Shilaa, 
(20) Shaalmali-drum,  (21) Shonit-Koop and  (22) Shonit-Bhojan.
